5 Reasons Why to Start Your Resolution Before January 1

by BLAIR MORRISON

Blair Morrison, CrossFit Games veteran and owner of CrossFit Anywhere has great tips for athletes tempted to push off their next trip to the gym until after the busy holiday season.

5. Avoid the rush.

When January 1st comes, everybody and their mother is going to be filing in to gyms to “start the year off right.” This means your resolution quest will most likely be crowded, annoying, and filled with equipment shortages. Maybe you’re the kind of person that likes to battle for medballs and kettlebells, but if not, do yourself a favor and get ahead of the crowd.

4. Get better coaching.

This time of year is always the slowest for the fitness industry. People tend to visit family members out of town, save money for gifts, or just plain hunker down when the weather gets cold. This means gyms are at their emptiest and coaches are at their least encumbered. If you walk in and tell a coach you want to start CrossFit in November, chances are you’re going to get his or her undivided attention. That means a better opportunity to learn movements, prevent injury, and form a bond with your instructor.

3. Limit the damage.

Everybody knows how much of a hit their nutrition takes around the holidays. Gravy, stuffing, casseroles, and pies are delicious staples of the season, but they come at a price. All those calories make for a thick winter coat you’ll have to carry to the gym come January, so why not counteract some of that weight gain by hitting the gym now? If you know you’re going to be eating cake and drinking egg nog, there’s no better reason to work your butt off.

2. Momentum.

It is an indisputable law of physics that an object in motion will stay in motion. The same is true with fitness. The more days you have under your belt, the easier it is to get up and go again. If you are serious about making a real change in your lifestyle for 2014, you’ll have a better chance of doing so if you hit the ground running. By the time everyone else is ready to start fresh, you will be in mid-season form.

1. Because you can.

There will never be a better reason to exercise than this. You are a living, breathing, functioning human being with no excuses; the sooner you get out there and start acting like it the better. Your body has no concept of dates or times, so the idea that it will be easier for you to start training January 1st is plainly ridiculous. All you are doing is putting it off. Make your resolution, do your research, and get excited about starting as soon as possible.
