‘Live life in moments, not in days or years or your schedules. It’s our misconception—most of the time—that we live our lives the way we want. Every single step that we take is influenced by others. Only the part that we hide from everyone else and keep deep within our heart, is our own. I strongly urge you all to realize that hidden part of yours. Go, live that part. Live your life. Don’t let your dreams die within you. Trust me, your struggle, your fight, will be worth the risk in opening yourself up. Get up. Inhale the air of passion. Start your journey. Grab your dreams. Enjoy your mistakes. Dance to the rhythm of your heartbeats. Smile. Laugh. Love. Live.’~
This week’s “Sunday Start” is about taking that first step…Where one’s journey began with fitness. Where did you start? What do you want to achieve?
Some of you have heard my story before but for those who haven’t, here are the cliff notes for the past 10 yrs…
•2009: Overweight (215#) and depressed PE teacher and Coach-The day I finally snapped out of it was when I realized I wasn’t doing my PE kids any favors by sitting on my rear while telling them to exercise. Why wasn’t I?
•December 2009: Decided to take on the Body for Life Challenge; a 12 wk Transformation journey that literally changed my life; “met” several dear friends on an online forum who got me through the highs and lows…
•March 2010: End of my first challenge, lost around 15# so I took a week break and joined up for a second challenge. I was lifting dumbbells 3x/wk and running (short distances) 3x/wk
•May 2010: Entered my 1st 5K and fell in love with the competition of beating my previous times…
•June 2010: Finished my 2nd Challenge-I could see muscles! Lost another 12ish pounds and people were starting to notice! This exercise stuff does work if you’re disciplined!
•July 2010: Took a couple weeks off from “training”; probably a bad idea bc I half heartedly entered a 3rd challenge the end of July…got 3 wks in and was stuck. That’s when my bestie Michelle in Alabama found CrossFit…What the heck is CrossFit??
•August 10, 2010: My first intro class at the then CrossFit United in Como; I took 5 1-1 classes with Scott before I entered regular classes. I was hooked…since I was still coaching at Trinity, I couldn’t make it every day to class so I would do my own thing or a workout from Michelle’s gym in AL. We LOVED it!
•October 2010: After 3 wks of half assing the regular challenge and then adding CrossFit, I went from 22% body fat to 15.1%! I wanted to share how I did it with everyone!
I set up a meeting with the moms at my school and shared my story of how I lost 53# and 47” and about 25% body fat.
•October 2010: I also got to meet all of my online friends at a BFL meetup in Nashville…Life-changing! Surround yourself with those who want you to succeed!
•November-January 2011: Continued with CrossFit then had surgery that put me out of commission for 6 wks; I traveled to AL to stay with Michelle a couple days and we had this wild notion to get our CF Level 1 Certification(I had no intention of owning a business, as I was just wanting ideas for CrossFit Kids and use the name at school)…so we signed up! Me in Fort Leavenworth, KS in March 2011 and Michelle in San Jose in April…We passed! Now what??
•June 2011: Started up “Boot Camp Babes” 🤣 I had a website “Mid-MO Fitness and the night before our 2x per week classes I would post the location of our workout spot…at the park, Capitol, sand vball courts, track??? It was fun and we did a couple 4 wk sessions.
•August 2011: BCB’s would meet at the school at 5:30am or 5:30pm…so much fun! I still have my little idea notebook!
•October 2011: another meetup in Nashville and was encouraged to apply for affiliation in CrossFit….no idea what i was doing or if it would work.
•October 28, 2011: Officially received word that CrossFit Unstoppable was an affiliate! WooHoo! Now what?? Find a building…Get equipment…Recruit Members!
•November 28, 2011 was our first official class at the “Baby Box”, a little 3-car maintenance shop where if there were 8 people it was crowded. Many of the BCB’s “crossed over” to the CrossFit side and I’m thankful they trusted my vision.
Shout out to Amy, Edith, SarahR, Stacey, and Tammy for sticking with me through thick and thin! ❤️❤️ You all are Angels!
•January 2012: We got “too big” for the baby box so moved to the “middle box”(the Otke building); major overhaul from the previous “globo gym” atmosphere.
•January 2013: After a month and a half of renovations, CFU moved into our current location…Lots of changes, lots of hard work and lots of transformations.
•June 2019: 7 Trainers, 1 Trainer Intern, (3 Trainer Interns in the works), 37 weekly training time slots, new programs to be added, 100+ athletes, ONE CFU Family!
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it…it ended up longer than expected, but I realize how much work it takes to make a dream happen…how much support one needs to have…how much faith you need not only in yourself but in those around you.
Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone and do the hard stuff to make YOUR dream happen?
I’ve rambled enough, but I’m sure I could have said more as I’m passionate about helping more people—What can I do to help you?!? Let’s make things happen!
Have a Happy Week!
Work Hard, Eat Clean, Be Blessed!
