Yesterday CFU “hosted” the 22 WOD to End Veteran Suicide…when I first saw the post awhile back on when the workouts were to happen across the nation, it hit home with me and I wanted to do something. I’ll admit that time got away from me and I failed to post anything about it until mid week. However we did have 13 athletes take part in the workout and we raised $70 for the cause (if anyone else would like to donate, let me know).
At minute 22, everyone was to pause for a moment of silence and reflect. I did, and it brought tears to my eyes because I knew in more ways than one that this workout meant a lot to many people. The subject of suicide is a bit taboo as is mental illness and many do not like to talk about it. Many times I stay quiet about subjects such as this but I feel that now is the time to speak out because I KNOW that the Power of One can help save a life.
I think everyone has been affected by suicide or mental illness either personally or you know someone who is affected. It has happened in my life…my step-mothers, my brother, classmates, acquaintances at church and community. Many times these people put on a facade that everything is ok and maybe just maybe if that ONE time someone would have reached out, something may have changed their fate or direction. I’m being very vulnerable here in admitting that I was saved back when I was a freshman in high school…my brothers weren’t supposed to come home early that day due to a ride via my cousin, but God made it happen and I believe that to this day, it’s why I’m typing this. I thank the good Lord every day for my life now. I still struggle some days, but I’m better than yesterday 🙂
I believe that my mission and vision to Be the One is alive and well inside of me and I will continue to try to be that one person to reach out to either say the right thing, smile at the right time, or lend a hand when needed. Am I perfect? Nope, not hardly but I try my best and I hope that you will join me on the mission to Be the One to help everyone you can. Be the One to be the change in the world. Some day it will all come back!
So as I close, I challenge you this week and all the rest of your weeks to be a little kinder, be a little nicer and always strive to be Better Than Yesterday! God Bless!
